Shrunk Riverview Tower – Portland, OR
Residential Tower Seismic Upgrade
In coordination with MWA Architects, AZH Engineers provided seismic evaluations for upgrades to this 11-story CMU apartment building in Portland, OR. The evaluations determined the deficiencies of the lateral structural system and provided construction documents for the seismic upgrades consisting of shotcrete walls, with foundation retrofit and new steel drag struts.
Portland State University Pedestrian Bridge - Portland, OR
Evaluation and Seismic Retrofit
AZH Engineers was hired by Portland State University for a three-phase evaluation, analysis, and retrofit design of all the pedestrian bridges at the university campus. In the first phase, we provided on-site observation and review of existing drawings to determine adherence to existing drawings and determination of structural deficiencies. The second phase included detailed calculations and analysis of the bridge sections and connections based on the latest building codes, which showed the concrete columns were structurally inadequate for seismic loading. The third phase included full structural calculations and construction documents for the retrofits of all deficiencies, including strengthing the concrete columns and foundations. AZH also provided details for the support of nonstructural items that had begun to fail, as well as an engineer’s estimate for the construction cost of the project.
TVFR Training Center – Sherwood, OR
Floor System Retrofit
AZH provided structural investigation and retrofit designs of an existing failing floor system at the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue in Sherwood, OR. Added loads from office furniture and kitchen equipment on the second floor were casuing excessive deflection of the long spans of the open web wood joists. The retrofit solution included new glulam beams, tube steel columns, and new concrete footings. The retrofit solutions were chosen to minimized disturbance to space and keep cost within budget.
Steel Bridge Shoring - Portland, OR
Steel Girder Shoring During Maintence and Repair
AZH Engineers provided the shoring design for the lifting and servicing of a large 102-foot steel girder for this vertical-lift steel bridge in Portland, OR. The isolation pad between the girder and concrete pier as well as supplemental steel bracing and bolted connections all needed to be replaced due to wear over the years. AZH was involved throughout the design and repair process, including being on-site during the raising of the girder, making sure the deflections and settlements of the members and foundations were within tolerance.
Vernonia Middle School Existing Building Reuse – Vernonia, OR
Originally built in 2005, the former Vernonia Middle School building experienced major flooding in 2007 and had since been abandoned by the Vernonia School District. AZH was hired to perform a structural feasibility study of the existing building for possible re-use at the school district’s facilies at a new location away from the flood plain. Our report documented the gravity and lateral system as well as the condition of existing building components. Findings of the study showed that re-use of the structural steel and many other building components was possible and will provide considerable cost savings compared to an all-new construction.
